Copper Cladding by Aurubis Architectural (formerly Luvata)
Product Description
Copper has a long and proud history as a building material with unique architectural properties – although the SURFACES, FORMS and SYSTEMS being developed by Luvata have redefined it for contemporary design. It is lightweight, with low thermal movement and is easily and safely worked at any temperature. Copper is particularly durable, with no maintenance requirement and an exceptional lifespan, with examples of copper roofs still performing after several hundred years.
The sustainability credentials of copper have already been clearly demonstrated. Although the copper industry is well-known for recycling, Luvata’s Nordic range is, however, exceptional with 97% of copper produced for roofing and cladding applications during 2008 and 2009 coming from recycled material. Energy consumption and global warming potential figures are less than half for copper generally - already significantly lower than stainless steel and aluminium.
Luvata’s ongoing development of unique copper architectural products is driven by designers. It offers unrivalled design freedom supported by the expertise and personal service needed to realise design concepts in copper, no matter how innovative.

Luvata Surfaces
NORDIC GREEN – pre-patinated copper
Nordic Green™ Living offers designers unparalleled design freedom and the ability to determine the type and intensity of patina for each project. The factory process can be accurately controlled so that, as well as the solid green patina colour, other intensities of patina flecks can be created revealing some of the dark oxidised background material. There are no limitations on the length of pre-patinated copper sheet or strip because whole coils are treated on the production line, not just limited size sheets.
NORDIC BROWN – pre-oxidised copper
Nordic Brown™ products are pre-oxidised at Luvata’s factory to give straightaway the brown surface to both faces that otherwise develops over time in the environment: both light and dark versions are available. Nordic Brown™ is useful to minimise hand and other construction marks which can occur for a short time after installation with ‘bright’ standard copper. But light and dark versions can be combined – perhaps with other finishes (such as Nordic Standard, as on the project shown) – to create various visual effects.
NORDIC ROYAL – copper alloy
Nordic Royal™ is an alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc which is very stable. It has a thin protective oxide layer containing all three alloy elements when produced. As a result, the surface retains its golden colour and simply loses some of its sheen as the oxide layer thickens with exposure to the elements to give a matt finish.
NORDIC BLUE – pre-patinated copper
In marine climates, the natural copper patina contains some copper chloride giving it more of a blue colour and this is emulated with Nordic Blue. Using a similar factory process to Nordic Green, pre-oxidised copper is sprayed with specifically formulated copper compounds to create the desired patina colours and heat-treated to chemically bind them to the copper. As well as the solid blue colour, other intensities of patina flecks can be created revealing some of the dark oxidised material behind.
NORDIC BRASS – copper alloy
Nordic Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc with a distinctive golden yellow colour. When exposed to the atmosphere, the surface changes to a dark brown in a similar way to copper.
